Compared reading physical books vs audiobooks for 3 months straight and one killed my retention

My book club had this huge fight about whether audio counts as reading. So I decided to test it myself. I read the first half of The Power Broker on audio during my commute and the second half physically over two weeks. The difference was insane. With audio I could barely remember character names or timeline details. But reading physically I caught foreshadowing and connections I missed entirely. I think the issue is my brain wanders with audio and I can't flip back to check a previous chapter. Has anyone else tried this side by side and noticed the same thing?

Audio isn't really reading since your eyes aren't moving across text.
