Appreciation post: The trick that got my book club actually debating

My group kept nodding along to everything until I started picking books with a clear moral gray area, like one where the main character lies to save someone. Last month we read a story about a woman who fakes her resume and we argued for two hours about whether she was wrong or just smart. Have you found a type of book that guarantees a real debate instead of everyone just saying it was good?

Moral gray areas work better with real world stakes, not just character choices.

Oh man, I gotta push back on that. Real world stakes can be great for tension, but some of the best moral gray areas come from small personal choices. Like choosing between hurting a friend or telling the truth, that hits just as hard as saving a city or whatever. Character choices are where we really see who someone is deep down. Stakes don't have to be global to matter, they just have to feel real to the person making the call.
