Warning: Hand-scraping boiler gaskets is a dying skill

Back in the day, we scraped every surface clean by hand. Now guys just use power tools and sealant. Miss the sure fit of a hand-scraped seat. Saw a blowout from rushed prep last week. Always take the time for a proper seal.

Actually, from what I've heard, power tools don't always mean a bad seal. It's more about the person using them. I know a guy who uses a grinder with a light touch and gets seats just as clean as hand scraping. Rushed work is the problem, not the tool itself.

My cousin fixes watches with a dremel, so skill definitely matters.

Seen it happen both ways. A steady hand with a grinder can work, but you need to know when to stop. The real issue is that power tools let you mess up a lot faster than a scraper does. Most shops are on the clock, so speed wins over being careful. That's why the bad jobs usually come from a spinning disc, not a hand tool.
