Unpopular opinion: packing my torch tip with steel wool cost me 6 hours on a Tuesday job in Gary
Had a 3/8 inch tip that kept popping out on a vertical weld, so I stuffed steel wool in the seat thinking it would hold pressure better. First two passes looked clean, then the puddle started wandering and I chased porosity for 6 hours on a 20 foot seam. Pulled the tip at lunch and found wool fibers melted into the orfice, so I swapped in a fresh tip and finished in 40 minutes. I learned that tip seats are cut to seal metal on metal and any packing just gives gas a path to sneak through. Anyone got a trick for worn tip seats that doesn't mean tossing the whole torch head?
