That foreman who said my bevel angles were too tight, he was spot on

Started a job last month on a pressure vessel and wanted clean, tight bevels, so I cut everything at 20 degrees. My foreman, Dave, pulled me aside and said I was making it harder on the fitter and the welder. He told me to open them up to 35 degrees, and I thought he was just being picky. First root pass on the 1 inch plate blew right through, no slag traps, and the weld bead laid in perfect. I measured our time on the next joint, we cut that fit-up time nearly in half. Anyone else run into a lead who gave angles or gaps advice that felt wrong but saved your back?
