Talked to a 30 year veteran at the union hall about his first boiler job...
He said they used to weld everything by hand with no grinders and it hit me how much we rely on angle grinders now, got me wondering how many of you old timers started out without a die grinder in your kit?

No way he welded everything by hand with no grinder. That sounds brutal, having to blend every pass with just a file and some elbow grease. I can't imagine the patience that took, a single bad weld meant hours of grinding with no power tools to help.

Did he mention if they just accepted more grinding with files or did they develop different welding techniques to avoid the cleanup as much as possible? Like laying flatter beads so they blended together without needing to knock down a ton of excess, that sounds like the kind of adjustment you'd have to make with only a file for cleanup.
