Stick welding vs MIG on a big repair job I had last spring
Had to choose between stick and MIG for a cracked boiler drum in Gary. Went with stick because the wind was brutal. Took me 8 rods to get it right but that bead held like iron. Any of you guys face that choice on site and pick wrong?

Preheat consistency matters more than the process choice in wind like that.

That line about preheat consistency is interesting - were you running a temp stick on the metal between passes, or just relying on the initial heat to carry through?
