Shoutout to the old timer in Gary who told me torque specs matter more than feel
I laughed at him for 3 years while I was hand tightening flange bolts on low pressure steam lines, then we blew a gasket on a 150 psi header in 2019 and I never second guessed a spec sheet again, so what tool or habit did you swear off until it bit you?
Learned that same lesson the hard way with impact guns on lug nuts back when I was doing fleet work. I figured good and tight was good enough and never checked with a torque wrench, just zipped everything down until it stopped moving. Then a guy brought his truck back two weeks later with warped rotors and a wheel that had started to wallow out the stud holes, and I had to eat the cost of new rotors and studs on a job that barely paid anything to begin with. What really got me was finding out the spec was only like 140 foot pounds, nowhere near what that gun was putting out. Now I keep a torque wrench in the truck and I use it every single time, even when I am in a hurry. That old timer would have saved me a few hundred bucks and a lot of embarrassment if I had just listened.
