My old foreman changed my mind about pre-heating thick plate

I was rushing a job in Gary last month and he said, 'You're not saving time, you're making a cold crack's vacation home.' That stuck with me because we found a tiny flaw later that week. Anyone else have a simple rule that saved your butt?

Remember my dad saying a rushed weld is just a future break waiting to happen. I argued until a simple lap joint failed on a basic trailer gate. Now I never skip cleaning the metal, no matter how small the job.
