Hot take: Using a proper bevel prep machine versus a hand grinder for heavy plate

We had to weld up some 2-inch thick pressure vessel sections last month, and the time difference was crazy. The machine gave us a perfect 37.5 degree edge every time, while the hand work was all over the place and took three times as long. Anyone else made that switch and seen a big jump in fit-up speed?

Oh man, is that even a question? The machine wins every single time on thick stuff. That perfect edge just makes everything after it so much faster. You spend less time fixing bad fits and more time actually welding. Why fight with a grinder when you can just set it and forget it?

Right there with you @patricia_kelly, that perfect edge changes everything.

Are you kidding me? I've been saying this for years. Once I finally switched to a proper machine for the heavy stuff, I felt like an idiot for wasting all that time with a grinder. The cuts come out so clean you barely have to touch them before welding, and the speed difference is ridiculous. Plus, you avoid all that dust and noise, which my neighbor definitely appreciates. It's one of those tools where you wonder how you ever got by without it.
