Figured out my torch tips were undersized after 12 years in the trade
I was having trouble getting clean cuts on 1-inch plate last month and blamed everything from the oxygen regulator to bad steel. Turned out my cutting tip was for 1/4 inch material max. I found a tip chart from Victor on their website that laid out the exact orifice sizes and gas pressures for different thicknesses. Nobody ever showed me that in apprenticeship, I just grabbed whatever tip was in the drawer. Has anyone else run into sizing issues that made them feel like a rookie after years in the shop?

That bit about "just grabbed whatever tip was in the drawer" hit me hard... I spent years doing the same thing with my MIG gun liners. Nobody ever told me there's a specific liner diameter for hard wire versus soft wire. I was running .035 hard wire through a .045 liner for like 8 years and wondered why I got so much birdnesting on long gun leads... finally switched to the right size liner last month and it's like a whole new welder. Made me feel pretty dumb honestly.

Blairm35 meant tips, not liners, but I get what you're saying.
