Why does nobody talk about the guy who explains every rule for 20 minutes before a game?
I was at a meetup two weeks ago and this one guy spent a full 20 minutes walking through every single edge case in Spirit Island before we could even pick colors. Another player finally just said 'can we please just start playing?' and he got all quiet. Is it better to explain everything up front or just learn as you go? Has anyone else dealt with a rules lawyer who kills the energy before the game even starts?

20 minutes for Spirit Island edge cases before even picking colors? Honestly that's wild, I've played that game a ton and you can teach the basics in like 5 minutes then figure out the weird powers as they come up. Ngl that guy probably just wanted to feel smart but ended up making everyone dread the game before it even started.

oh man this reminds me of something that happened to my friend sarah at a board game cafe. she was trying out terraforming mars for the first time and this guy spent like 25 minutes explaining the entire deck of cards before anyone could even pick their corporation. apparently someone just grabbed a random card and said "i'll learn as we go" and the guy literally took the card back and went "no wait, you need to understand the terraforming rating first". the energy was so dead by the time they actually started that two people just left after the first round lol
