Went to a board game cafe for the first time last week and nobody explained a single rule to me

I sat down for a 4-player game of something called 'The Colonists' and the guy just handed me a 20-page rulebook without even saying hi first, has anyone else dealt with people who treat board games like a chore instead of a fun hangout?

... and honestly I used to be one of those people who would just hand over the rulebook and be like "figure it out." But after my first time playing a heavy game where the guy just sat there flipping through pages while I stared at a board full of tiny wooden pieces, I totally get how frustrating that is. It's like they forget not everyone's been doing this since birth, you know? Now I always make sure to walk through the basics before anyone touches a single piece, especially with games like The Colonists that have a million little rules. Some people treat it like a test of endurance instead of something we're supposed to enjoy together.

Wait, people actually just hand you the rulebook and tell you to figure it out? That's wild to me. Like, isn't the whole point to have fun together, not pass a test?
