Warning: That board game cafe in Portland is not what you expect

I visited Board Game Paradise in Portland last Sunday and walked into a room full of people playing Magic: The Gathering tournaments, not casual board games. There was zero space for someone like me who just wanted to try Wingspan with a friend. The owner told me "we focus on competitive play here" when I asked about a Catan table. Has anyone else found a board game cafe that actually has room for casual games and not just a card shop vibe?

Is it really that big of a deal though? Sounds like you walked into a tournament day, doesn't mean the place is always like that. Maybe check their schedule next time instead of writing them off completely.
