That one Saturday where every game night went sideways

Last fall I hosted a game day at my place in Portland, six people lined up for a full afternoon. We started with a light filler and someone knocked over a full mug of tea right onto the scoring track, which warped the cardboard beyond saving. Then we moved to a worker placement game and realized two of the rulebooks had conflicting edits, so we spent 45 minutes arguing about farm placement instead of playing. By the time we got to the big cooperative game, one player had to leave for a family emergency and the whole group dynamic just fell apart. I remember looking at the clock around 5 PM and thinking we'd played maybe two actual turns of something fun in four hours. The only bright spot was a quick card game we pulled out at the end that took 20 minutes and everyone finally laughed. It made me wonder if I should start vetting rules online before every session, or if that just takes away the spontaneity. Has anyone else had a day where the setup itself became the real challenge?

Vetting rules beforehand is the only way I've survived bigger game days like that. I keep a search tab open on my phone for the game's official FAQ or any threads about controversial rulings, and it's saved us from exactly that 45 minute farm placement argument. Also, paper towels and a lint roller are now permanent fixtures on my game table, learned that one the hard way. The trick is to only look stuff up when there's a genuine dispute, otherwise you're just adding homework to a hobby. The 20 minute game that finally clicked is proof that sometimes the simple stuff needs to come first to break the tension.
