Picked the 4-player co-op over the competitive classic, best call in a while

Last Friday my crew of four sat down to game night and we were split between Gloomhaven or trying something lighter like Catan. I pushed hard for the co-op because two of our guys get weirdly salty in competitive games, and honestly I was tired of the night ending with someone sulking. We grabbed a used copy of Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion for 35 bucks at a local swap meet and dove in. The first scenario took us almost 3 hours because we kept reading rules wrong, but once we figured out the monster AI it clicked. Halfway through the second scenario we had this awesome moment where the tank blocked a door and the sniper picked off the boss from behind. My one buddy who usually rage quits was laughing the whole time, and we already scheduled next Friday to keep going. Has anyone else had a co-op session turn a normally competitive group into a solid team? I'm curious what scenarios worked best for you.
