My group stopped playing after I introduced scoring for storytelling

Three weeks ago at our weekly meetup in Portland, I suggested we award bonus points for creative narration during our fantasy campaign. Everyone got quiet and the guy who always wins said it ruined the competitive balance. Has anyone else tried adding roleplay scoring without killing the fun?

I used to think scoring would just make people competitive in a bad way, but honestly it sounds like your group just wasn't ready for it. We tried something similar a few years back and it actually made the quieter players speak up more once they saw they could get points for trying.
