My brother swore Catan would take 90 minutes and it lasted 5 hours
Last Saturday my brother dragged me into a 4 player Catan game at his place in Fresno and promised we'd be done by 9. We rolled dice until 2 in the morning because nobody would trade wheat to anybody and two players kept hoarding sheep. I learned that a "quick game night" is a myth and the robber token turns grown adults into petty jerks. Around hour four somebody said "one more round" and I almost flipped the table. Does anyone actually have a house rule that keeps Catan from dragging all night?
Five hours is rough but honestly the "one more round" thing is on your group, not the game. Catan has a built in clock if people actually play to win instead of hoarding cards and refusing every trade. The real fix is a turn timer, like 60 seconds per turn and if you don't trade you lose the offer. Also playing to 8 points instead of 10 cuts a solid hour off. Blaming the game for a table full of stubborn traders is a bit unfair.
