I was sure my friend's 'cooperative' board game night would be boring

He invited me over last Friday to play Pandemic Legacy, and I figured it was just a group puzzle with no real stakes. We lost our first game in March, but the way the story changed the board for April completely hooked me. Has anyone else been totally surprised by a game they thought they'd hate?
