I finally spoke up about rule cheating in my game group
You know, I love board games, but sometimes the people part is hard. We've been meeting for game nights, and it's usually fun, but one player keeps cheating. He changes rules, like in Ticket to Ride, he took extra cards when no one was looking. I think this is wrong because it ruins the game for others. Some friends say it's no big deal, since we're all here to have fun, but I had to speak up. Now things are tense, and I'm not sure if it was worth it.

Stuff like this pops up everywhere, like when my neighbor always parks over the line so he gets more space. It seems small, but it makes everyone else adjust around his selfish move. Calling it out feels uncomfortable, but letting it slide just teaches people they can ignore the rules. Do you worry that silence makes the cheating seem okay to the group?

Ugh, littering gets me the same way.

Yeah, that line about silence making it seem okay hits hard. I had a buddy who'd always "forget" to pay his share for pizza on game night. Just a few bucks, but it added up and everyone else had to cover it. Letting it go felt like we were saying his free meal was cool. Finally had to call him out and it was super awkward, but he started paying after that. Sometimes you gotta deal with the tension or the bad habit just gets worse.
