Game night ended early when my neighbor brought his 1998 Monopoly set

So Thursday we were doing our usual weekly game night at my place. Five of us, beers out, ready to crack open something new. Then my neighbor Dave walks in holding this beat-up box with tape all over it and says 'I found this in my dad's garage.' It was a 1998 Monopoly set, complete with the original plastic money and houses that look like they've been chewed on. We played one game. It took 3 hours. Somebody lost their shoe piece under the couch for twenty minutes. But honestly, that old set had more character than the three new games we played the week before. The cards were stained, the board had a coffee ring on Free Parking, and Dave kept arguing about the old rules where you don't collect on Chance. Has anyone else gone back to an ancient beat-up game and had more fun than with a shiny new Kickstarter? Or am I just weird for liking the smell of musty cardboard?

Wait, you don't collect on Chance in the old rules?? That's wild, I never heard that one before! Dave sounds like he's got some serious lore knowledge there. Honestly half the fun of old games is the weird house rules people swear by, even if they're totally made up. Musty cardboard smell is like a time machine, I totally get it. Three hours for one game sounds brutal but also kind of perfect, real bonding time.

my buddy greg used to have this ancient copy of clue from like the 70s, and his grandma made up a rule that if you landed on the same square as someone else, you had to trade one card with them. we thought it was just her being weird, but turns out her whole neighborhood played it that way growing up. one time we got so into it we forgot to eat dinner and his mom came down to find us screaming at each other over a pipe wrench, haha. idk man, those weird rules are half the charm, even if theyre not in the book.
