Debate: Are expansions necessary for a board game to be good?
I picked up a base game last week and played it 4 times, but after that it felt like we ran out of strategies. Then my friend brought an expansion and it totally revived the game for me. Do expansions add real value or are they just a money grab to fix a broken game?

Blame the base game for being shallow in the first place. A GOOD base game should have enough depth and variety to keep you interested for way longer than 4 plays. I've got base games with ZERO expansions that I've played over 50 times and still find new stuff in. Expansions are just a bandaid for a game that wasn't fully cooked, tricking you into paying more for something that should have been there from the start.

Buddy of mine bought a base game last year and still finds new hidden stuff without any expansions.
