The old timer who made me redo a sleeve weld on a 6 inch pipe

Last month at a job site in Toledo, this retired boilermaker watched me lay a pass and just shook his head. He told me my heat was too high, said I was fighting the puddle instead of leading it. I was annoyed at first, but he handed me his worn Miller and I redid the joint, night and day difference. Has anyone else had a stranger's critique that actually stuck with you and changed how you run a bead?
