Stopped by a little forge shop outside Asheville last weekend
The guy was still using a coal forge from the 1800s and said his fuel bill is $30 a month compared to my $150 propane tab, has anyone else tried switching to coal just to see if it actually saves money?

Betty, coal clinkers wreck your firebrick way faster than propane ever will.

Wait wait wait, $30 a MONTH for coal?! That's insane. I mean, I know coal is cheaper but I figured it was, like, maybe half what propane costs, not one fifth. My jaw hit the floor when I read that number. Last time I checked on coal setups (which is years ago, to be fair) people were complaining about the mess and the smoke, but $120 a month savings would definitely make me consider sweeping out my shop more often.
