Shoutout to the guy who told me to try a propane forge instead of coal

I used coal for like 8 years and thought propane was for hobbyists... then I borrowed a buddy's setup for a weekend. The temp control is so much steadier, I got cleaner welds on my first try. Anyone else make the switch and never look back?

@susan424 nailed it with the temp control thing, that's really the core of it right there. Propane just gives you that consistent heat zone without the headache of managing coal bed thickness or dealing with cold spots. The cleaner welds come from that too, since you're not fighting temperature swings every time you adjust the airflow. Once you get used to setting the regulator and walking away, coal feels like a whole extra job on top of actually forging. I've got a buddy who still swears by coal for certain blade shapes and I respect that, but for general work propane is just way less fuss.

Glad the switch worked out for you, that temp control is a total game changer.
