My first knife quench cracked the blade and I almost gave up on the whole batch
Last weekend I was finishing up a small batch of 5 knives in my garage shop and went to quench the first one in my new canola oil setup. Heated it to 1475 degrees, pulled it out of the forge, and dunked it edge first. Heard a sharp ping about two seconds in and pulled it out to see a crack running halfway up the blade. Turns out my oil was only at 90 degrees, way too cold, and I was dunking way too fast for 1084 steel. I warmed the oil up to about 130, slowed my entry down, and ran the other 4 blades through with zero issues. Lost one blade and about 3 hours of work, but now I check oil temp with a cheap thermometer before every quench. Anybody else run into cold oil causing cracks, or is it usually a steel issue for you?
