Most smiths swear by old school mentoring, but I learn more from online videos

I hear a lot of talk that real blacksmithing skills only come from watching a master in the forge. Last month, I was struggling with twist patterns and found a clear video that showed me exactly where I was going wrong. That free tutorial saved a commission piece I was ready to scrap. Relying only on the guy next to you means missing out on a world of knowledge. I think being open to digital lessons makes us stronger craftsmen. Do you ever use video guides to pick up new techniques?

My last welding project was saved by a YouTube deep dive.

Oh man, I feel that deep in my soul. My entire ability to fix anything around the house is built on a shaky foundation of frantic YouTube tutorials. I'll watch some person do it perfectly in three minutes, then spend three hours creating a completely new problem. It's a miracle anything gets finished.

My old car's starter motor went out last year, and I swear I watched every single video on the topic. The comments section arguing about shims was the only thing that got me through it. That feeling when you finally find the one tutorial that shows your exact problem is just... pure relief. It's like a secret club of people who have already messed it up for you. I don't know how we fixed anything before having all those videos right there.
