Can we talk about how I wrote off propane forges for years?
I started smithing using a coal forge my grandpa gave me and figured propane was for hobbyists who couldn't handle real fire. Last month I visited a guy's shop in Ohio and he let me try his propane setup for a demo. After 30 mins of work I realized I wasn't fighting with temp control or smoke and my steel moved way faster. Now I'm looking at building my own burner setup - anyone switch over and regret it or not?

Wait, you wrote off propane forges for YEARS based on a coal forge from your grandpa? That's insane to me. I switched from coal to propane about 6 years ago and never looked back. The temp control alone is worth it - I can dial in exactly what I need for different steels without fighting with the fire or dealing with smoke in my eyes. Don't build a burner setup, just buy a decent ready-made one from a reputable guy. You'll waste hours tinkering and still end up with something that sizzles instead of burns clean.
