Bought a $60 harbor freight anvil, regret every swing

Picked up one of those cast iron anvils last spring and the face chipped on the third project. Has anyone else had luck dressing one down, or should I just save up for a proper forged one?

Read somewhere that a flat file and some patience helps more than the anvil's worth.
