A guy at the Charlotte meetup said my anvil stand was why my hammer work felt dead
Three smiths at the Charlotte meetup in March watched me draw out a taper and one of them, a 68 year old named Ray, said my anvil stand was eating half my hammer blow. I had that thing on a concrete block with a rubber mat under it for two years, and I swore by the mat because it kept the ringing down. He said put it on a wood stump packed with sand and bolt it down, so I did, and the same 3 pound hammer moves steel like it got 5 pounds heavier. My ears ring a little more now but the steel moves so much better. Has anyone else gone back and forth on quiet versus solid on their stand?
