Warning: Skip the first episode of The OA and come back to it later

I kept seeing The OA recommended on here so I finally started it last Tuesday. The first episode was so slow and weird I almost quit after 20 minutes. My roommate told me to just power through to episode 3 and she was right. By episode 5 I was hooked and now I can't stop thinking about it. Has anyone else almost dropped a show because of a bad start?

Buddy of mine tried watching The Expanse and quit halfway through episode 1 because he thought it was boring space politics. His girlfriend made him sit through episodes 2 and 3 a month later and now he's watched the whole series three times. He still complains about that first episode though, says it feels like a totally different show.

Oh man, that first episode is such a weird trap. I swear it's the show's way of testing if you're serious about space drama, like doing a trust fall with a hundred pages of UN meetings before you even get to the cool zero-G stuff. Meanwhile I'm over here still trying to figure out how to open a can of soup without burning myself, so maybe I'm projecting a little. But seriously, once you hit that Canterbury scene, the whole thing clicks and you're suddenly caring about ice haulers and proto-molecule. It's like the show's version of a public service announcement - "we promise it gets better, just suffer through the politics first.
