My DVD box set obsession ended when the player gave up
Last Sunday I dug out my old Battlestar Galactica box set, the one with all those discs from 2009, and my 12 year old DVD player just choked on disc 3. It made this grinding noise and then the screen froze on a menu screen for 20 minutes. I tried cleaning the disc with a soft cloth, even checked for scratches, but that player is done. Now I'm stuck deciding if I buy a cheap used player for $30 or finally give in and stream the show like everyone else. Has anyone else held onto physical media only to have the hardware betray them?

Man, that grinding noise is the physical media version of a death rattle. Same thing happened to my old PS2 when it ate my Final Fantasy X disc back in the day, I literally mourned it like a pet. Honestly, $30 for a used player feels like buying a life support machine for a zombie, but streaming just hits different when you remember you actually paid for the show once. Still, there's something kinda noble about being the last person who owns a working DVD player, like a museum curator for obsolete tech. My advice, grab the used player but also check if your library has the show on Blu-ray, feels less like giving up and more like an upgrade.
