I was shocked to learn that The Wire only had 60 episodes total

I was browsing Wikipedia last night and saw that The Wire ran for just 5 seasons and 60 episodes. For how much people talk about it as one of the best shows ever made, I assumed it had to be a lot longer. That is less than most modern streaming dramas that drag on for 8 seasons. Kind of makes me respect the writing more for packing so much into a tight run. Has anyone else been surprised by a show that had way fewer episodes than you expected?

Oh man, I totally get what you mean. I had the exact same moment when I looked up the episode count for The Wire after binge-watching it a few years back. It feels like a much bigger show than 60 episodes, right? I think it's because every season is so dense and every single scene moves the story forward instead of just padding the runtime. It really hit me how many modern shows stretch out a simple idea for ten seasons when they could have told their story in half the time. The Wire feels like a masterclass in using every single minute to build a whole world without ever wasting your time. It is honestly pretty amazing that they packed in so many characters and storylines into what is basically five short seasons.

Right there with you. The Wire earned every minute of those 60.
