Hot take: I finally finished a show I started three years ago
I had like 4 episodes of The Americans left from 2021 and finally watched them last night. Has anyone else ever taken a literal multi-year break in the middle of a series?

Totally get this. I paused The Wire for almost two years after season three. Came back and had to rewatch the last few episodes to remember who was even alive. Did the same thing with Mad Men, left Don Draper hanging in 1968 for a solid eighteen months. The weird part is, sometimes the break makes the ending hit different, like you've lived a whole life between starting and finishing.

Lived a whole life between" actually makes sense now.

Notice how this happens with shows, books, even video games now. I swear our attention spans got rewired by streaming and endless options. We used to watch one episode a week and that was it, you had to sit with it. Now we binge three seasons then wander off for six months because something shinier came along. The breaks actually make the stories feel more real though. Characters grow and change while we're gone, just like real people we lose touch with. It adds a weird layer of authenticity that weekly TV never had.
