Heard someone at the library say they skip the first 3 episodes of every new show

I was at the library downtown last Saturday and overheard this guy telling his friend he skips the first 3 episodes of any series. Said most shows don't find their groove until episode 4 or 5. It blew my mind because I usually give up after 2 episodes if I'm bored. Tried it on that new mystery show on Hulu. Skipped to episode 4 and actually liked it. Anyone else find shows pick up later on?

Heard my coworker say she skipped the first 5 episodes of The Office and only saw the later seasons. Said she still got all the jokes and characters fine.

Wait, do you mean she skipped the first five episodes or the first five seasons? Because if she only missed the first five episodes, like "Office Olympics" or whatever, that's not a huge deal. But if she skipped the first five seasons, she basically missed Michael Scott's entire character arc and like half the show's best moments. The early seasons are where you actually get the setup for Jim and Pam, and Michael being a total doofus but also a lovable boss. I feel like you'd miss a lot of the inside jokes that come back later, like the Dundies or "that's what she said." Still, she probably got the gist of it because the later seasons are more ensemble driven, but she's definitely missing some classic stuff.
