Binged The Office 3 times before someone told me I was watching it wrong

I always watched The Office on my phone while scrolling through Twitter. After 3 full rewatches, my buddy asked why I kept calling it a background show. He made me sit down on his couch with no phone and actually watch the characters' faces during the awkward pauses. Now I catch so many little looks and reactions I completely missed before. Has anyone else had a "wait, you're supposed to watch it THAT way" moment with a show you thought you knew?

My buddy had that exact "wait you're supposed to watch it THAT way" moment with Arrested Development. He watched it on his laptop while cooking dinner and missed half the narrator jokes and background signs. After I made him rewatch it with full attention, he got so mad at himself for not realizing how layered the comedy actually was.

Totally get this, @abbyd36! I did the exact same thing with Community the first time. I had it on in the background while folding laundry and kept laughing at random stuff but had no clue I was missing half the visual jokes and running gags in the background. Once I actually sat down and paid attention, I felt so dumb for not catching the layers in the first round. It's almost like a completely different show when you watch it properly.
