Took the $2.13 plus tips over $16 flat at the diner, and my first check settled it
When I got hired at the diner on 5th back in March, the owner gave me a real choice: stay on the old server wage of $2.13 an hour plus tips, or take a flat $16 an hour and hand the tip pool over to the house. I picked the flat rate because the math felt safer and I liked knowing what Friday would look like. Big mistake. The other two servers kept their tips and I watched them walk out with $90 to $140 a shift while my check stayed the same whether we got slammed or sat dead for three hours. What really got me was a Saturday where I ran 14 tables solo because the closer called out, and I made the same $128 I would have made on a slow Tuesday. I asked the owner to switch me back after six weeks and he said no, the flat rate was the deal. Now I tell every new hire at that counter to take the tips and gamble, because the house always sets the flat rate so the house wins. Any of you ever get stuck on the wrong side of a pay deal like that, and did you quit or wait it out?
