The register froze mid-customer and I had to do math in my head

Working the lunch rush at a diner in Fort Worth, Texas when the POS just died on me. Ticket was $42.75 and the guy hands me a fifty, so I'm doing 50 minus 42.75 in my head while a line is forming behind him. I got it right after a few seconds, but the guy tells me he was a math teacher and gave me a thumbs up. Has anyone else had to go full old-school calculator mode when the system crashes?

Three cents off is what the math teacher should have noticed. Most people can do 50 minus 42.75 if they actually stop panicking. The real problem is the register freezing at all. You should have just taken the fifty, handed him seven bucks and a quarter, and told him to keep the change. That would have moved the line faster and the teacher would have graded you on speed, not accuracy.
