That customer who tried to negotiate a dollar off a broken item

Guy comes in last Tuesday with a cracked mug from our clearance rack, wants 50% off on top of the markdown. I tell him it's already discounted because it's damaged, and he says, 'So you're admitting it's worthless?' Then he asks for my manager over a 3 dollar mug. Has anyone else had a customer argue harder over pocket change than their actual purchase?

Honestly, that story reminds me of a guy who argued with me for ten minutes over a 99 cent price tag that was already marked down from 5 bucks. The real issue isn't the money, it's that some folks think haggling makes them look smart or in control. But here's the thing, you're not admitting the mug is worthless, you're just saying it's been dropped and has a crack. A 3 dollar mug on clearance is already at the bottom of what it's worth, and giving another 50 percent off would basically mean you're paying them to take it. Next time, just tell them the price is final, offer to hold it for them for an hour, and walk away. Some people only stop pushing when they realize you won't budge.

Did you see that study about haggling being a power trip? @wyattmitchell nailed it.
