Rant: A customer told me 'you're just a cashier' last Tuesday, but my manager said something later that stuck with me.

After my shift, my manager pulled me aside and said, 'You handled that with more grace than I could have, and you're the reason that guy will probably come back,' which made me realize our job is less about the task and more about being the calm in someone else's storm.

My old boss once told me that the people who yell the loudest are the ones who feel the smallest, and I feel like that kinda fits here. But like, is it really that deep though? I mean yeah your manager was nice about it, but at the end of the day that dude probably forgot your face five minutes after he walked out the door.

Honestly, just remembering that their bad day isn't about me helps me stay calm.

Assume everything is about you to stay sharp. People often take their anger out on the closest target, which is usually you. Treating it as personal keeps you ready to defend yourself.
