I was writing down orders on the back of receipts for 2 years before a cook told me to stop
I have worked the counter at a diner in Akron for about 6 years now and I always wrote orders on the back of used receipts because it felt faster. A line cook named Marcus watched me do it on a busy Saturday and asked why I wasn't using the actual order pad with the carbon copy. He pointed out that when I got weeded, my handwriting turned into scribbles and he had to walk out front 4 times that morning to ask what a table wanted. I switched to the pads the next week and my ticket mistakes went from about 5 a night to maybe 1. Funny thing is the pads were sitting in the drawer the entire time, I just never bothered. Anyone else stuck with a bad habit at work because it felt quicker?
