I actually like working the closing shift and I know most people hate it
Everybody at my diner fights over opening shifts but I volunteered for closings 6 months ago and it's way better. Less managers breathing down my neck and I made $85 in tips last night just from the late night regulars. Anyone else actually prefer the weird hours?

Late night regulars are a different breed for sure. Do they tip better because they're drunk or because they're just glad the place is still open?

Oh totally, "different breed" is right. I had a guy come in at 2 AM once, clearly had a few drinks, and he tipped me forty bucks on a fifteen dollar tab. I think it's a mix of both - they're feeling generous from the alcohol, plus they know you're the only place open and they appreciate you being there.

Nah I gotta push back a little on the "drunk = generous" thing. I mean yeah some people tip bigger when they're buzzed but I've also had late night regulars who were totally sober and still threw down crazy tips. It's more about them knowing the crew and wanting to take care of us cause we're there for them at weird hours. Like this one guy who comes in after his night shift at the hospital, always leaves a 50% tip even when he's stone cold tired.
