Actually... $10k over 5 years breaks down to about $2k a year. That's only around $40 a week in tips if you're working full time. I don't mean to sound harsh but that's really not a lot for waiting tables. Most servers I know pull that in a couple months, not half a decade. Maybe you're at a slow place or only working part time shifts. Just wanted to point out the math because it might be good to look at why your tips are that low. Could be the restaurant, the area, or maybe how you're connecting with customers.

Your math is actually a bit off. $10k over 5 years is $2k a year, sure, but $2k a year divided by 52 weeks is about $38.46 a week, not $40. Small difference, but still. More importantly, though, $40 a week in tips for a full time server is crazy low even for a slow place. Something doesn't add up here. Either the original person isn't working many shifts or the restaurant is just dead. Either way, they should probably look for a better spot.
