Had a regular at the coffee shop ask me why I always put the milk in first

He said his grandma, who ran a diner for 40 years, told him it stops the hot drink from cracking cheap mugs. I've been doing it the other way for 5 years and never had a problem, but now I'm curious... does that old trick actually work, or is it just a myth?

Is it really that big of a deal? I've used cheap mugs for years and never had one crack from hot coffee. It seems like a solution for a problem that barely exists anymore.

My great aunt swore by putting a metal spoon in the glass before pouring hot tea to stop it from breaking. She had this one specific teaspoon with a chipped handle she called her "safety spoon." We tested it once as kids with two cheap glasses from the dollar store. The one with the spoon survived, the other one cracked straight down the side. Never figured out the science, but she was right about that one.

I've got a buddy who runs a food truck and he swears by pouring the milk in first for his iced coffee jugs. He uses these old mason jars that are pretty thin, and he said he lost like three of them before he tried it. It's worked for him for two summers now, no cracks. I'm not a coffee pro but I've seen it with my own eyes, so I figure there's something to it.
