Had a customer try to return a half-eaten sandwich today at the deli counter

Tbh I've been working food service for 4 years now and this one still got me. A guy comes up to my register with a turkey sub he said he bought yesterday, wrapped back up with two bites taken out. He claimed it tasted 'off' but I could see the bite marks were clean and fresh. My manager came over and told him we can't take food back for safety reasons. The guy then started yelling about how he was a regular and we owed him a free replacement. I just stood there quiet while my manager held firm. Has anyone else dealt with someone trying to return clearly eaten food like this?

People really have no shame, I feel for you having to deal with that nonsense.

The "people really have no shame" part got me. I dealt with this one time by just laying out the hard facts in an email, no emotion, just like "here are the numbers, here's what we agreed on." It took a couple of days but they finally backed off when they saw they couldn't argue with the math. Sometimes you just have to let them burn themselves out and then calmly hit them with the truth.
