Why does nobody talk about the switch from hot lather machines to brush and bowl?
I used a hot lather machine for my first 5 years in the shop, thinking it was the modern way. After a client in Austin brought in his own badger brush and asked for a real shave, I tried it his way. The control and quality of lather from a good brush, like a Simpson's, is just better, and it changed my whole hot towel service. Has anyone else made this switch and seen a difference in client satisfaction?

Honestly, my grandpa swore by his old brush and mug, and now I get why.

Actually, the lather from a brush and soap isn't really about the mug. It's the brush action that lifts the hairs and makes the soap work better. That's the part your grandpa probably liked, not the container itself.

My grandpa was the same way, @emmasmith. He had this cracked ceramic mug and a brush with bristles going every which way. There's something about that old-school lather that just feels better than the stuff from a can.
