Told a regular in my chair to skip the gel and use a cheap bar of soap, and his hair did a full 180 in 2 weeks
Honestly I felt like an idiot saying it out loud. This guy Marcus has been coming to my shop in Toledo for 4 years, always asked for the same fade and always complained his hair looked flat by day 3. I kept selling him the $22 gel we stock and he kept buying it. One slow Tuesday I told him to just wash with a plain bar of soap for a bit and lay off every product for 2 weeks. He came back and his crown had real body to it, not that greasy shine he used to have. Turns out he was piling gel on hair that was already oily and it just sat there. I lost a sale but he tipped me $20 and told two buddies. Now I ask every client what they put in their hair before I even touch the clippers. Any of you ever cut a product out of a guy's routine and get a better result than adding something?
Did he say how often he was washing before? Curious if the soap fixed things or if it was really just cutting out the gel. Also how does a bar of soap even lather in Toledo water, that stuff is hard as rocks.
