Rant: The walk-in who brought his own clippers to my chair in Tucson

I had a guy come in around 2pm on a slow Tuesday, sat down, and pulled out a pair of dull-looking clippers from his backpack. He said, 'Can you just use these instead? My old barber swears by them.' I tried one pass on the back of his head and the blade snagged a patch of hair. He got upset when I told him I'd rather use my own equipment, but I'm not about to work with something that could pull a client's hair out. I charged him a $10 touch-up fee and he left grumbling. Has anyone else had clients bring supplies and expect you to use them?

Man that reminds me of this guy who showed up at my buddy's shop with his own barber cape from home. Looked like something out of a 70s salon, all floral print and stained. He insisted on wearing it because it was "lucky." My buddy let him do it just to avoid the argument, and the guy sat there the whole time giving instructions like he was directing a movie. Weirdest part was he tipped fine and came back three more times with that same cape. People get attached to the weirdest stuff, I guess. But man, clippers with dull blades is a whole other level of trust issues.

Actually, dull blades don't mean trust issues. Most barbers keep multiple sets and one might just need a quick service. The real red flag is when a client brings their own tools and expects the barber to use them. That cape guy sounds like he was more control than luck. A barber's clippers should be his own business, and anyone else's gear is probably a hygiene problem. Plus, a floral 70s cape that's stained? That's not luck, that's a biohazard. People are weird about rituals, but there's a line between superstition and just being a hassle.
