Master barber in Dallas told me to slow down on fades, he was right after 6 months

I picked up a fast fade style from watching YouTube and got cocky with my clipper work. A guy named Marcus who runs a shop off Lower Greenville watched me butcher a blend and pulled me aside. He said my issue wasn't skill, it was speed, and I needed to switch to a slower guard progression. I ignored him for 2 months and kept fixing mistakes on the same head, wasting 20 extra minutes per cut. Finally tried his method of going from 1 to 1.5 to 2 instead of jumping straight, and my rebook rate jumped like crazy. Anyone else fight their ego on advice that sounded too simple to matter?

Slow down to speed up" is basically the secret to everything, not just fades. I see it all the time with people learning guitar or even cooking, they rush through the steps and then wonder why it comes out messy. When you force yourself to take it easy, you actually start noticing what you're doing wrong, and that's when you get better without even trying to be faster.
