Just read that barbers used to be surgeons back in the day

Found it in a history book at the library, they called them 'barber-surgeons' and did way more than haircuts. Makes you think about how much the trade has changed. Anyone else know any other weird old barber facts?

That's a great point from @grant.luna. You see this everywhere, like how a pharmacy's mortar and pestle sign comes from old chemists mixing drugs.

Yeah but that pole story gets repeated a lot. I read it was more about the bandages themselves. They'd hang the bloody bandages outside to dry, and they'd twist around the pole in the wind. The red and white spiral comes from that, not just colors picked for ads. It was a practical thing people saw every day. The whole bloodletting tool connection is there, but the visual was an accident.

That red and white barber pole is actually a leftover symbol from the surgery days. The red stood for blood and the white was for bandages. Kind of grim when you realize it's basically an old school medical ad.
